Newburyport Pickleball was founded in 2016 by a small group of pickleball enthusiasts. We are an all volunteer group of citizens dedicated to expanding opportunities and facilities for people of all ages to learn and play pickleball. Our mission is to build a stronger, more vibrant pickleball community here in Newburyport. Since 2016, the sport has grown enormously. Newburyport has several places where you can play, but no courts have permanent nets. We have placed two portable nets at Cashman Park for your use from May to December.
2 courts shared with tennis.
8 a.m. to 8 p.m. except when reserved by organized/recognized groups.
Courts cannot be reserved by individuals.
Two nets are available for general use, bring your own balls and paddles.
BACKBOARD for practice.
2 courts shared with basketball
School department property
Play after 3:15 p.m. , at weekends and on school holidays
Bring your own nets and balls except when participating in organized play.
3 courts shared with basketball
2 courts shared with tennis
8 a.m. to 8 p.m. except when reserved by NYS or other officially sanctioned uses.
Bring your own nets and balls.
Whenever playing on public courts on a non-reserved basis, play is first come fist served.
You and your group are asked to leave the court ONE HOUR after someone else arrives to use the same space.
All courts are multi-use and no sport has preference over another. However, if it is possible to accommodate someone shooting hoops in one area while you are playing in another, this is the obvious way to handle mixed use.
Please do not play before 8 a.m. to show consideration for the neighborhood.
No courts are floodlit.
Please do not leave trash on the courts.
Offers clinics, private reservations and open play on Friday mornings 9-12 p.m.

For the past three years, our players have generously donated personal care items to Community Service of Newburyport to distribute to low-income families who cannot use federal and state aid programs for such purchases. Among the things we have collected are paper towels, deodorants, toothpaste, shampoo and razors. These collections occur each summer and we cannot thank people enough for their participation.
Each April, the Parks Department asks for assistance with spring clean up, Members of Newburyport Pickleball have been involved in raking and bagging sticks and leaves at Perkins Park. In addition, we purchased a lining machine, tape and paint in order to re-line the pickleball courts at the park which were last painted in 2017.
Thanks to two AVID pickleball players, Dave Brody and Kim Scott, who have generously organized a pickleball cruise on the Merrimac for the past three years, money has been raised to support Our Neighbors' Table. Additionally, money raised was used to support the efforts of Newburyport Pickleball in renovating pickleball courts and buying equipment for open play.
Many people learn pickleball from friends and unfortunately, there are many misconceptions passed on about the rules of the game.
MISCONCEPTION #1 - you cannot enter the kitchen until after the ball has bounced. YOU CAN GO INTO THE KITCHEN WHENEVER YOU LIKE - YOU JUST CANNOT VOLLEY WHEN YOU ARE IN THE KITCHEN.
MISCONCEPTION #2 - the partner of the server must stand at the baseline.
WHILE IT IS THE BEST PLACE FOR THE PARTNER TO STAND IN ORDER TO BE READY FOR A LONG RETURN OF SERVE, THERE IS NO RULE ABOUT WHERE ANYONE STANDS EXCEPT THE SERVER.
MISCONCEPTION #3 - once you have stepped into the kitchen you MUST get out before making your next shot.
IT MAKES GOOD SENSE TO GET OUT, BUT THERE IS NO RULE AGAINST YOU STAYING IN THE KITCHEN AND MAKING YOUR NEXT SHOT AS LONG AS THE BALL BOUNCES
MISCONCEPTION #4 - the drop serve can only bounce once before you hit it.
NO - THE BALL CAN BOUNCE MULTIPLE TIMES. IT ALSO DOES NOT NEED TO BE HIT WITH A UPWARD MOTION LIKE THE VOLLEY SERVE AND NEITHER DOES THE PADDLE HEAD NEED TO BE BELOW THE WRIST.
MISCONCEPTION #5 - the ball hits me (before bouncing) when I am standing outside the line, so the ball is out.
NO- IF THE BALL HAD BOUNCED OUTSIDE THE LINE BEFORE HITTING YOU THAT WOULD BE AN OUT BALL, BUT YOUR BODY INTERFERED WITH THE BALL BEFORE IT COULD BOUNCE - THE CALL IS AGAINST YOU.
MISCONCEPTION #6 - I volleyed and made a winning shot, but then my momentum made me fall into the kitchen. The point was over before I went into the kitchen so I win the point.
NO YOU DON'T. YOU MUST "ESTABLISH" YOUR BALANCE OUTSIDE THE KITCHEN AS YOU MAKE THAT VOLLEY - IF YOU FALL IN, THE WONDERFUL PUT AWAY SHOT IS NOT YOUR POINT.
